Boise State Eyes A Potential Walk-On

Oaks Christian QB Richie Harrington (Westlake Village, CA) is an intriguing prospect and his "lack of experience" appears to be the only thing holding him back right now as he's looking for a chance to play at the next level. Three schools in particular are evaluating him as a possible preferred walk-on and one of those is Boise State.

"Oregon State, Boise State, and Cal are recruiting me," he said. "All three talk to my head coach a lot and those are the only big D1 schools I'm interested in right now," he added.

Harrington began his HS career at Santa Monica HS and transferred to Oaks Christian prior to the 2009 season. He sat out the 2009 season due to transfer rules and thus the 2010 season was his first as a starting QB at the varsity level.

"I thought transferring to Oaks would give me a better opportunity to get to the next level. I just want an opportunity to play in college," he stated. "I've always had to earn my place. I'm just looking to find a school that will give me a chance to earn a scholarship and help the program."

The talented QB competed with Trevor Gretzky during fall practice and was named the #2 QB going into the season. Gretzky struggled in the first couple games and Harrington became the starter before the end of September. He seized that opportunity as he wrapped up the 2010 season with 34 TD passes and 2,600 yards passing.

"Winning the CIF Championship and beating Westlake when this was supposed to be our down year is definitely a good way to end your senior season," Harrington said. "Westlake beat us in the first game and being able to get revenge was great since we were able to prove we were the better team."

Harrington's head coach is currently handling his recruitment as he continues to reach out to schools and gauge the level of interest for Richie's services. Oregon State and Boise State will both send a coach down to Oaks Christian to meet with Harrington during the first week of January.

"I haven't set-up any official visits or anything like that yet," he said. "I know Coach Banker from Oregon State and Coach Pease from Boise State will be coming down in early January." (Interview conducted prior to Coach Pease taking the Indiana OC Coaching job.)

What does Harrington (6'2, 205) bring to the field?

"I think I can make all the right throws," he said. "The coaches really helped me out since I didn't have a lot of experience and I also had lots of athletes around me as well," he added.

Harrington is also an excellent student as he carries a 3.0 GPA and a 1750 SAT score.
