Barry Switzer Wants Another Shot at Coaching

Just when you thought the coaching carousel in college football couldn't get any more crowded, Barry Switzer saddled up his pony and dared someone to dangle a brass ring in front of him.

Barry Switzer appeared on SiriusXM's College Sports Today with Mark Packer on Friday and was asked if he'd ever consider coming back to coaching.

"I'd come back for the money," Switzer said. "You're damn right I would." Emphasis on "damn."

Just for good measure, Switzer reiterated his point, in case nobody heard him the first time.

Barry Switzer is one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. His coaching record at Oklahoma stands at 157-29-4—that's a .837 winning percentage which puts him among the most elite college football coaches. Switzer is no spring chicken at age 74, but Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder is doing quite well at 72 years old, thank you very much.

Granted, Switzer had more scholarships to work with back in the day and the NCAA has gotten a little more stringent with its rules and restrictions *cough* but the remote possibility of Switzer back on the sidelines has got to be intriguing for some college football programs that need a proven winner. Three national championships and a Super Bowl championship should do it. Three years probation including a two-year post-season ban may not.

In 1989, Switzer reportedly said he would never coach in college football again. But if a program like UCLA came along waving two or three million at him, would he take it? Remember, UCLA went with Rick Neuheisel who wasn't exactly flying under the NCAA's radar when he was hired. With rumored candidates reportedly dropping like flies on UCLA's short list—Kevin Sumlin and Chris Petersen are the latest according to some reliable sources—would UCLA consider Switzer?

So the question is, do you take a chance on a coach who is one of the greatest but has also has enough baggage to fill an A320 AirBus?

Who's willing to take that ride?
