Andy Dekaney HS TE
(Houston, TX) wrapped up his senior season over the weekend in a thrilling 34-14 win over Steele in the 5A State Championship Game. With the win, Andy Dekaney finished the 2011 campaign with a 14-2 record and now the future Bronco will turn his attention towards preparing for
"I think I did everything right in that game," he said. "I think I messed up one or two times, but it wasn't costly. You still want to play a perfect game, but I feel I had one of my best in my HS career on both offense and defense."
"What we had this year was discipline," he stated. "We worked harder in the weight room and it showed. It's every HS player's dream to win the championship in their last year."
"I take pride in what I do, but the guys that line up next to me were just as important as I am," said Nance. "We work hard together and get it done."
Andy Dekaney went from 6-4 in 2010 to 14-2 in 2011. Nance says maturity was the big difference between the two teams.
"The maturity of our guys," he said. "We also had the discipline and the senior leadership this year," he added.
"There's nothing wrong with winning, but everything wrong with losing," he said. "To keep winning you have to stay humble. I'm going to Boise State with a better mind-set."
Nance spoke to Head Coach
on Sunday afternoon as the entire coaching staff wanted to congratulate him on the big win on Saturday.
"I talked to Coach Petersen yesterday," he said. "All of them wanted to congratulate me on the championship, told me to keep my head in the books, and get back up there to get on that winning roll again."
"Coach Petersen is a calm guy," said Nance. "He's just really down to Earth, a man of his word, and I know being taught by a man like that will make me a better man myself."
"I'm 100% committed."
Looking back, Nance says the famous blue turf at Bronco Stadium and the academic success of the football team played a big role in his decision to become a Bronco.
"The first thing was the blue field. I had never seen anything like that and it caught my eye," he said. "Second, the football team is outstanding and the coaches do a great job. They're also student-athletes at Boise State and I like how a high percentage of players are at the top of the class."
And the move to the Big East? Nance says his mom is "really excited."
"My mom got really excited about that when I first told her," he said. "It's good for me too. I'll be able to catch up with a couple guys from home. That'll be fun."
Nance (6'2, 245) competes just as hard in the classroom as he does on the football field. He takes pride in his academic work and says you're always a student and then an athlete.
"I've got a 3.5 GPA and a 4.2 weighted right now," he said. "That's most important to me. You're a student before you're an athlete. That's why the title is student-athlete. When young guys ask me about that...that's what I tell them."
BroncoCountry.com will continue to have updates on Armand Nance.
