Fontana (Calif.) Summit defensive back Charles Okonkwo took a visit to Boise State on Friday and…
SoCal CB Visits The Blue
"I definitely could see myself playing for them," he said. "What I liked was how the players said the coaches focus on the student as a person and they have that family atmosphere," he added.
"I got there on Friday morning and then left the next day," he stated. "The coaches showed me around when I got there, the campus, the facilities, and overall I was pretty amazed. Everyone seemed real friendly."
"I spent the most time with Coach Bhonapha," said Okonkwo. "He's a real cool dude...knows how to relate. I felt comfortable around him."
And the new football facility that will open in the summer of 2013 caught Okonkwo's attention as well.
"That new facility is amazing. They also said they're going to make the stadium bigger soon," he said. "What my mom liked was the new business school that will open soon. I want to major in Business so that was real nice to see."
"It looks like a great place to live," he said. "I thought the people were very friendly and it was definitely a great environment."
Once again, Head Coach Chris Petersen had a large impact on the visit with his focus on academics and the overall family atmosphere in the program.
"I spoke to Coach Petersen too," said Okonkwo. "What I like is how he's all about academics and puts the student first before the athlete. That's important. I really liked hearing that."
"I definitely could see myself playing for him."
So, where does Boise State stand following his visit to The Blue?
"I still want to say I'm open for right now," he said. "I liked it a lot and the visit to San Diego State as well. I want to wait a little while longer before naming any favorites."
"Donte has been in my ear a little bit," he said with a laugh. "He told me I'll have to earn my spot if I decide to go there. They don't hand you anything at Boise State. I liked hearing that. He thinks Boise State is a great place."
And spring practice will start next week at Summit HS as they look to start preparations for their CIF Title defense heading into the 2012 season.
"We start next week. Coach Bhonapha will be coming down in a couple weeks to watch," he said. "We're just going to look to pick right up where we left off last year. I think we'll have a good team this year."
