Bronco fans will have a chance to say thanks to
three seniors on the Boise State tennis team, each not only outstanding tennis
players but outstanding young men. It's Senior Day for Coach Greg Patton's
squad, as Boise State hosts #53 BYU Friday and #61 Fresno State Saturday.
Both matches begin at 1 p.m. and have post-season implications for the
Broncos. Beck Roghaar, Matias Silva and Ikaika Jobe will all take the court
Saturday in their final regular-season home matches of their Bronco
careers. Boise State will compete in the Western Athletic Conference
tournament next week in Hawai'i and, depending on results around the nation,
could possibly compete in the NCAA National Championships.
Roghaar is a four-year letter-winner and a WAC
all-academic honoree. Although an injured knee has cut down on his court time
the last two years, Roghaar has still put together a singles record of 45-33 as
a Bronco. He has also been a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee
and recently was one of 25 seniors to win a Boise State Leadership Society
Senior Leadership Award. Silva, from Lima, Peru, is a four-year
letter-winner who has compiled a career win-loss record of 100-47 in singles as
a Bronco. Matias has played anywhere from one through three for Boise
State in the past couple of seasons and has been ranked in the top 75 in both
singles and doubles several times. It's been short but very sweet
for Jobe, a native of Honolulu, Hawai'i, who transferred to Boise State for his
senior season from St. Louis University. Jobe has gone an impressive 24-10
this year, playing primarily # three and four singles for the
Broncos. Roghaar and Silva were on the Boise State’s 2003 WAC
Championship team.
In
the four years of these three seniors’ careers, the Broncos have gone 76-36 in
dual matches. Asked to comment on the three, Coach Patton said, “Who
would have thought we could put together three crazy kids/men from Hawaii, Utah
and Peru and come out with these ‘three amigos’ to lead the team this
year.”
The Fresno State game was originally scheduled for
Sunday but was moved up to Saturday due to flight changes for the Fresno
team. Please note that parking is available both Friday and Saturday in
the Student Union Building parking lot.
If the matches move inside because of wet weather, parking will be at the Boas
Indoor Tennis Center.
