Teams that control their own
destiny. Teams that if they win the rest of their
conference games will be WAC Champion. |
| Blue |

their own destiny. Teams that if
they win the rest of their conference games would at
least tie for
the WAC championship.
|
| Yellow |
Teams that have lost control of
their own destiny. Teams that if they win the rest of
their conference games would still need help from
other WAC teams to win or tie the WAC
championship. |
| Orange |
Teams with two conference losses,
WAC championship hopes are greatly diminished.
Typically a team with two losses will finish no better
than second place in conference standings. |
| Red |
Teams that are no longer playing
for first place.
Teams that are mathematically eliminated from winning
the WAC championship. |
|
Changes from last year affecting WAC BOWL STANDINGS and schedule.
Last year the WAC had 10 teams and an unbalanced schedule.
Last year each WAC team played 8 of the 9 WAC opponents.
Last year each WAC team skipped one WAC opponent.
This year the WAC has 9 teams and a balanced schedule.
This year each WAC team plays 8 of the 8 WAC opponents.
This year each WAC team will play all WAC opponents.
This balanced schedule makes it easier to determine tie breakers and standings
as the season progresses.
Tie breakers are used for bowl determination.
From the WAC website:
Bowl
placement shall be determined as follows:
1. The top two teams, based upon regular season finish, shall receive
guaranteed bowl berths.
2. If the University of Hawaii is bowl eligible, and if the WAC has at least
three bowl slots, it shall receive a berth in the Hawaii Bowl, regardless of
its place in the Conference regular season standings.
3. Once bowl representatives have been determined, a committee consisting of
the Commissioner and Athletics Directors not involved in the pool of eligible
teams, in consultation with the Conference’s bowl partners, shall
select and place team(s) according to the “right team, right placeâ€
principle. The Committee shall seek to balance the best interest of the bowls
versus the best interest of the Conference and involved team(s).
4. Ties in the regular season standings shall be broken based upon
head-to-head regular season competition.
* Two Tied Teams.
The winner of the regular season game between the tied teams shall receive the
higher place in the standings.
* Three or More Tied Teams.
Compare the records of the tied teams against each other. The team(s) with the
best record(s) versus the other tied teams receives the higher place in the
standings. If this results in more than one team having the best identical
record against the other tied teams, use head-to-head tiebreakers for only those
teams. If the tie still cannot be broken, the Bowl Placement Committee shall
break the tie.
Tie breakers are not used for
determination of the WAC champion.
From the WAC website:
The
2005
WAC football champion will be determined by the regular season standings in
conference games.
Here is this from the WAC code book.
3. Championship Determination
a. Regular Season
The team with the highest won-lost percentage of Conference games played shall
be the regular season champion.
Two or more teams that are tied with the same conference record shall be
considered co-champions.
Concerning the minimum number of games that must be won
to be considered bowl eligible by the NCAA for the year 2005.
For 2005 a winning record is required (more wins than losses).
For 2005 there is no exemption for 6 win 6 loss teams.
WAC teams that play a 11 game regular season schedule need a record of 6 wins
and 5 losses or better.
WAC teams that play a 12 game regular season schedule need a record of 7 wins
and 5 losses or better.
