The entire Boise Valley is buzzing about the start of Bronco football on August 31st against the Hornets of Sacramento State. Although this is the first meeting between the two schools, there are several tie-ins between the two schools.

Want to know something about the history of the Sacramento Football program? Ask a Nevada fan! Nevada played Sac State in their inaugural football season in 1954 and 25 times since then. Nevada has lost to the Hornets nine times. In 1977, the Pack beat Sac State 75 to 0 in 1977!

Interesting Trivia for Bronco fans:

Sacramento State replaced Boise State in the Big Sky Conference when Boise State joined the Big West in 1996.

Montana State beat Sacramento State in the 1964 Camellia Bowl.

Sacramento State is a member of the WAC in baseball and gymnastics only.

Here is a brief look at Sacramento State’s Football Conference Affiliations:

1954-1984 Northern California Athletic Conference – A NCAA Division II Conference that included Fresno State, San Jose State, UC Davis, Nevada & Pacific
1985-1992  Western Football Conference – A NCAA Division II Conference that included Cal Poly-SLO & Santa Clara
1993-1995  American West Conference – A NCAA Division 1-AA Conference that included Cal Poly-SLO, Southern Utah & Cal State - Northridge
1996-current  Big Sky Conference - A NCAA Division 1-AA Conference that once included Boise State, Idaho, & Nevada

California State University – Sacramento was founded in 1947. Their mascot is the Hornets and their school colors are Green & Yellow. The Hornets play football in Hornet Stadium--capacity 21, 418. Their Sports Message Forum is SacBuzz.com and the official sports website for Sac State is hornetsports.com.

The glory years of Sacramento State football were from 1966 to 1968. Coach Ray Clemons guided his team to a four-year record of 31 wins and 10 losses.

Current Coach Steve Mooshagian is in his fourth season as the Hornets. Steve is an alumnus of Fresno State. His best friend at Fresno was Jeff Tedford. Yes, the same Jeff Tedford that is the current California Head Football Coach. Steve and Jeff played together in junior college and both went on to be star players at Fresno State. After their playing days, both were coaches at Fresno State.

Bobby Mooshagian, the coach’s son, plays wide receiver for his Dad.

Remember Lou Fannuchi? His brother Tyler chose Iowa over Boise State. Now he plays for Sacramento State. Look for number 14 at the wide receiver position on August 31st.

Remember Scott Criner? Son of Herb Criner, Former Timberline Football Coach….Former XFL coach with his Uncle Jim….former Bronco player…

Scott is the Offensive Coordinator for Sac State. And Scott has hired his father, Herb as a part-time coach too. It will be strange to see Herb and Scott on the other side of field on August 31, 2006.

Sacramento State is a D1-AA football team that is not expected to have a winning season by anyone outside of Sacramento. The will roll into Boise on August 31st for a Thursday night game. This game should not be close. The Bronco fans and players will be looking forward to the Oregon State game scheduled seven days later. But it is a game that should be interesting for the die-hard Bronco fans due to the few Bronco ties listed above.
