Boise State's football team returned to a familiar place today--the national top 25 rankings. The nation's voters overlooked a lackluster performance on offense against Wyoming to give the Broncos the nod over Penn State and Alabama.

Another sequel for the Blue and Orange.  While traditional powers like Miami of Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska were losing, Boise State this week made its fifth annual appearance in the nation’s top 25 polls.  This morning, the Broncos were included in both the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ poll and the Associated Press poll at #25.  Boise State edged up from #26 in the AP poll and up from #28 in the Coaches’ poll.

The Broncos first began their run in 2002, when they steadily climbed the rankings to a peak of #12 in the Coaches’ poll and #15 in the AP poll.  They followed that up the following year with another top 15 finish (#15) in the Coaches’ poll and #16 in the AP top 25.  In 2004, they broke through the top ten and finished #12 in the AP poll and 13th in the Coaches’ poll.  Last season, Boise State was 18th in the preseason but a bowl loss to Boston College knocked them out of the top 25 in the final polls.

The nation’s coaches elevated Boise State past Penn State into the top 25, giving the Broncos one more vote than the Nittany Lions.  Coach Chris Petersen’s team topped Alabama to get the #25 spot in the media poll.  Boise State takes on the team that nearly beat that Alabama squad on its home field (Hawai’i) this Saturday in Bronco Stadium.
