Stop number eight on the Broncos' agenda--a trip up treacherous Idaho Highway 55 to Moscow. A determined effort by the Vandals fell short, and Boise State escaped with a 42-26 WAC win. (Photo provided by foto208.com--all rights reserved.)

#18 Boise State ran away from Idaho today in the Kibbie Dome, downing their Moscow opponents 42-26 in Western Athletic Conference play.  The Broncos rode the strong legs of Heisman Trophy candidate Ian Johnson, who blitzed the Vandal secondary for 189 yards and four touchdowns.

Johnson looked superb, showing patience, amazing bursts of speed and instinctive running.  Johnson, who was listed fourth on CBS’s web site in the Heisman race, has now run for 1,187 yards and 18 touchdowns this season.  Vinnie Peretta filled in for IJ to give the sophomore a break and picked up 39 yards on three carries.

Senior Legedu Naanee had one catch for the Broncos, but it was a big one.  He hauled in the ball, gave a stiff arm to his closest defender, and sprinted in for a 62-yard touchdown.

The rejuvenated Idaho team put forth a game effort for new coach Dennis Erickson, who lost his first game against Boise State in Division I-A.  Erickson, who coached in Moscow in his first head coaching job, had beaten the Broncos four times in I-AA football more than twenty years ago.  Quarterback Steve Wichman connected on 24 of 46 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns, but also suffered two interceptions.  Marlon Haynes led the Vandals in receiving with six catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The Broncos won for the eighth time this season without a defeat while Idaho slips to an even 4-4.  Boise State has a week off before a nationally-televised encounter with archrival Fresno State November 1st in Bronco Stadium.  Idaho faces the meat of its schedule, going against Hawai’i, Nevada and Fresno State in succession.
