The #44 Boise State women’s tennis team gave it a game
effort but in the end, they simply were no match for #16 Fresno State, as the Bulldogs shut out the Broncos
4-0 in the finals of the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
After Fresno easily swept the doubles point, the
teams moved to singles and they were no contest. Bianca Jochimsen lost to the nation’s #3
player, Melanie Gloria by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
Jana Mackova fell to Anastasia Petuhkova 6-3, 6-2. Polina Kokoulina did fight back to stave off
elimination. She lost the first set 6-2
and was down 5-2 in the second when she rallied for three wins to tie it at
five games apiece. But time constraints
prevented the match from being finished.
Thus, Jacqueline Haskett’s win over Boise State’s Tiffany Coll 6-3, 6-3 clinched the
match for the Bulldogs.
Klaudia Wlodarczyk was the only Bronco
to win a set as she defeated Tinesta Rowe in the second 6-3. The match was
abandoned as the third set began.
Six members Broncos were
selected to the All-WAC team in a ceremony following the match. Kokoulina was named to the All-WAC first team in singles while Wlodarczyk
and Mackova earned second-team honors.
Mackova and Laura Baum were named to the first team in doubles, and Coll
and Jochimsen made the second team.
Congratulations to the Fresno State Bulldog women—WAC Champions for the sixth year in a row! And congratulations to Boise State for a second straight runner-up finish!
