Boise State
is the most prolific college football scoring machine since 1999. The Broncos have scored an incredible 4,139
points since then in 102 games, an average of 40.5 points per game. Boise
State has scored 280 more points
during that time period than the second-place school, Texas. The Longhorns have totaled 3,859 over 101
games for an average of 38.2.
Boise State
is not the only Western Athletic Conference school in
the top 25. The league is quickly
gaining a reputation as an outstanding offensive league. Hawai’i ranks fifth in scoring from 1999-2006
with 3,627 points in 104 games, an average of 35.0 points per game, while
Fresno State is 16th with a 31.0 average.
Oklahoma, the
team that the Broncos vanquished in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, is among the leaders
as well, averaging 35.2 points a game.
The Sooners rank fourth in scoring average.
In fact, Boise State
has played five of the top offenses of the last eight years, compiling a 13-3
record against the nation’s top offensive teams. The Broncos are 6-1 against Hawai’i,
4-1 vs. Fresno State,
1-0 against Oklahoma and Bowling
Green and 1-1 vs. Louisville.
Boise State is #1 since they joined Division I-A in 1996--the Broncos have scored 4,993 points for an average of 36.71. Texas is second averaging 36.68. Coach Chris Petersen's team passed the Longhorns this year. Kansas State is third with an average of 34.6. Louisville is averaging 34.3 in that time period, followed by Florida (33.5), Nebraska (33.1), Florida State (33.0), Miami of Florida (32.7), Virginia Tech (32.5), USC (32.2), Texas Tech (31.9) and Oklahoma (31.4).
