The Boise State men’s golf team concluded an improbable run with a
third-place finish today at the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Reno. Boise State set a school record for a three-round score of 866. The Broncos nearly pulled off a shocking upset
of host Nevada as they were on top of the leaderboard with just nine
holes to go. Harsh conditions seemed to
affect the Boise State golfers more than others and they slid to third.
Nevada held on for the championship with an 860, beating out Hawai’i by one stroke. Fresno State was fourth with an 869, followed by New Mexico
State and San Jose
State (tied with 873’s), Louisiana Tech (877), Idaho (885) and Utah State (889).
Four members of the 2007 squad finished in the top
25, paced by freshman John Baranco.
Baranco was seventh with a 1-under 215.
All-WAC performer Troy Merritt tied for eight place with an even
216. Chris Byrne slipped today to fall
from fourth place to 12th with a total of 217. Matt Hastings finished the three-day
competition tied for 22nd with a 221.
