Although Boise State
has competed in Division I-A football for just 12 years, the Broncos can become
only the 15th school since 1980 to be a member of the “10-20 Club”
twice. To gain access to the exclusive
club, a school must win 10 or more regular season football games, followed by
20 or more regular season basketball wins that same school year.
Last fall, the Bronco football team was 10-2 during the
regular season (one of 15 teams in the nation to win 10 or more games), doing their part to make it happen. Thus far, the Boise
State basketball team is 13-5 with
11 games to play.
Boise State
achieved the feat in 2003-04, going 12-1 in football and 20-8 in
basketball. The Broncos joined Texas
as the only two schools to enter the club that year. The feat has been accomplished 38 times since
1996, the year Boise State began playing football in I-A, and only nine schools
have done it twice in that time. Boise State would be the 10th. The
Bronco football team, of course, won 10 or more games several times from 1980-1995, but
those victories came as part of Division I-AA.
The Western Athletic Conference is well represented, as six
schools from the WAC are in the 10-20 Club a total of seven times. Fellow Western Athletic Conference member Fresno
State just missed joining the Club
in 1982-83, when the Bulldog football team was 10-1 and the basketball team was
19-10. Other former WAC schools to join
the elite list are UNLV (1984-1985), Wyoming
(1987-88), UTEP (1988-89), BYU (1980-81 and 1989-1990) and Colorado
State (1997-98).
Texas and Oklahoma
are masters at accomplishing the milestone.
The Sooners have reached the plateau five times since 1996 and eight
since 1980, while Texas has also
achieved the feat five times since 1996 and seven since 1980. Michigan
has become a member of the Club four times while BYU has done it a total of
three times, once as a member of the Mountain West Conference.
In all, the 10-20 milestone has been reached just 38 times
since 1996 and 66 times since 1980, or a little more than two times per year.
