Boise State
is tied for 11th in the nation for the best combined Division I
football and basketball record. The
Broncos are in a six-way tie for 11th with Arizona
State, Clemson,
Indiana, Michigan
State and USC, all with 24-8
combined records. Boise
State finished 10-3 in football and
is currently 14-5 in basketball.
Since the basketball season contains over twice as many
games, emphasis is on a good basketball team, but to be near the top, a school
must be good at both sports.
Case in point: Duke,
which is 16-1 in basketball, has a bad football team at 1-11, making it hard
for the Blue Devils to look good in combined football-basketball records. LSU, which won the hypothetical national
championship in football, is just 7-12 in basketball, making the Tigers tied
for 61st in the country. Illinois,
which had a Rose Bowl football team, is mediocre in basketball and ranks 74th.
Other WAC schools in the ranks are Hawai’i
(45th—20-12), Fresno State
(tied with LSU for 61st—19-14)9-14), Nevada
(66th—18-14), Utah
State (83rd—18-16), San Jose
State (95th—14-17, New Mexico State at
#104 (15-20), Louisiana Tech (#115—8-22) and Idaho
at #120 (6-26).
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Traditional power Alabama
is all the way down at #61. Notre Dame
ranks #65, Nebraska is 70th,
Iowa is 85th, while Michigan
is 97th—tough times in Ann Arbor.
43 of the 120 Division I programs have winning records in
both football and basketball. They are: Air Force, Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas,
Auburn, Boise State, Boston College, BYU, California, Clemson, Connecticut,
Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Houston, Indiana, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue, TCU, Tennessee,
Texas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech, Tulsa, USC, Utah, UCF, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, 18 schools unfortunately have losing records in
both sports including one (Colorado)
of a “BCS” conference. They are:
Arkansas State,
Army, Buffalo, Colorado,
Colorado State,
Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Idaho,
Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana
Tech, Miami of Ohio, Middle Tennessee
State, Northern Illinois,
Rice, San Jose State,
SMU, Toledo,
Wyoming
