Boise State Takes To The Road

Boise State travels to play Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State this week in search of wins that will allow them to remain in second place in the WAC standings.

The best road team in the Western Athletic Conference will embark this week on a journey that will greatly affect their title hopes.  Boise State travels to play Louisiana Tech Thursday and New Mexico State Saturday.

Boise State is 8-2 on the road this season and already ranks fifth in school history for road wins with four road games remaining (see the complete list of statistics and records within reach for the 2008 Broncos).  Coach Greg Graham’s 2003-04 team set the school record with 10 road wins.  Eight of Boise State’s nine most successful teams on the road won a conference title or played in a post-season tournament.  The current Broncos put together the second-longest road winning streak in school history earlier this season before a heartbreaking loss to Utah State (beaten only by the seven-game stretch in 1998-99.  

It is not difficult to see why the Broncos are converting road opportunities into wins—they average 86.2 points per game away from home and make 53.4 percent of their shots.

Boise State’s 16-5 record is one of the six best starts to a season in school history and the best by a Bronco team since the Broncos were 16-5 during the 1998-99 season.  The 1987-88 team is far and away the most successful in school history, beginning 16-1 and compiling an 18-3 mark through 21 games.  That team also holds the school record for consecutive wins with 10.  Through the first 21 games, only the ’87-88 team, the ’88-89 team (17-4) and the 1969-70 team (17-4) have a better record than the current Broncos.  The 1986-87 Broncos were also 16-5 at this point in the season.  Of those five other Boise State teams, one qualified for the NCAA Tournament (1987-88), two others were selected to play in the National Invitation Tournament (86-87 and 88-89) and one played in the Division II National Tournament (1969-70).  The 98-99 team did not play in the postseason despite advancing to the Big West championship game.

Boise State leads the nation in field goal percentage (51.6%), and remarkably shoots even better on the road.  As good as that is, they still are short but within range of the 1987-88 Bronco team that shot 52.4%.  Boise State is also ninth in the country in scoring (83.1 points per game), ninth in assists (18.3) and 28^th in three-point percentage (39.5%).

Coach Graham’s Broncos lead the WAC in six categories:  scoring (83.1 points per game), scoring margin (8.9), field goal percentage, steals (7.38), assists and three point field goals (8.43). 

With four more wins, Boise State will become just the 15^th Division I school to be in the “10-20 Club” twice since 1980--this despite the Broncos not being a Division I football school until 1996.  The 10-20 Club represents the elite schools that have won 10 regular season football games and 20 regular season basketball games in the same school year.  Boise State accomplished the feat in 2003-04.  With five more wins, the Bronco basketball team will be fifth all-time in victories. 

Boise State has a legitimate chance to break school records for points, scoring average and assists in a season and a shot to top records for three-pointers.  In 21 games, the exciting Broncos have scored 1,745 points.  In ten more games, they have to average 68.6 to break the record of 2,431 scored by Coach Graham’s 2003-04 team.  Boise State’s current average of 83.1 points per game is eclipsed only by the 1968-69 Bronco team that averaged 83.3.  This year’s Boise State team also has 385 assists, an average of 18.3 per game.  Should they maintain that average, they would shatter the school record of 540 set by the 1975-76 team.  The Broncos have made 177 three-pointers this season, 86 shy of the all-time mark set in 2003-04.

The Broncos can also achieve all-time status in the record book for three-point attempts, three-point percentage, rebounds, rebounding average and by limiting opponents’ rebounds down the stretch.  Boise State has attempted 448 shots from beyond the arc, 122 shy of the fifth-place 1997-98 team’s total of 221.  Coach Graham’s Broncos are hitting 39.5% of those shots, a percentage that would rank third in school history.  Boise State has pulled down 741 rebounds this year, an average of 35.3.  By averaging 35.8 the rest of the season, they will match the 1993-94 Bronco team.  The interior defense of the Broncos has allowed just 676 rebounds so far (32.2 per game) and can reach the top five in school history by allowing 198 or fewer the rest of the way, which would be 19.8 per game.  That average would still be short of the 37.5 recorded by the 1978-79 Bronco team that holds fifth place.

The strong inside game has enabled the Broncos to get to the line 466 times this season, an average of 22.2 free throws per contest.  They would have to average 24.6 the rest of the way to earn fifth place all-time. 

Three of the WAC’s top 11 scorers play for the Broncos.  Reggie Larry (18.9 points per game) is third, Matt Nelson (16.0) is seventh and Tyler Tiedeman (14.1) is 11^th.

Larry needs just four points to become the 12^th Bronco to score 400 or more points in two seasons.  Reggie will join Boise State greats Steve Connor (four times), Tanoka Beard, Chris Childs, Coby Karl and Abe Jackson (three times each), and Roberto Bergersen, Ron Austin, Pat Hoke, Arnell Jones, Aaron Hayes and Vince Hinchen as multiple 400-point season scorers.  With 167 points, he would become just the 19^th Bronco to join the 1,000-point club.  Larry moved into a tie for ninth all-time in career blocks when he swatted away a Vandal attempt last Saturday to give him 60.  Reggie needs three more to pass Larry McKinney (1979-81) for eighth.  Tanoka Beard is the all-time leader with 160 career blocks.

Larry ranks among the WAC’s elite players in eight statistical categories, including leading the league in rebounding (9.4), scoring, three-point percentage (45.8%--fifth), field-goal percentage (55.9%--sixth), steals (1.52—sixth) and blocked shots (.76—eighth).  Reggie ranks 31^st nationally in rebounding.  He has a chance to make all-time career lists for scoring average, rebounding average (his current average would rank third all-time) and field goals and season lists for scoring average, rebounding average, field goals and three-point percentage (see statistics following this article).

Boise State is one of only eight teams that boast two of the nation’s top 100 rebounders.  Of that group, Larry and Nelson are the fourth-best rebounding duo with 17.4 per game between them.  Nelson also ranks fourth in the nation in shooting, hitting 132 of 200 shots (66.0%).  This season, Nelson has a chance to rank in the top ten in Bronco history in scoring average, rebounding average, field goals and field-goal percentage.  Tiedeman is second in the WAC and fifth in the country in three-point shooting (49.5%).  Tiedeman can make the all-time top ten in career three-point percentage, career three-pointers, three-point attempts in a season and season three-point percentage. 

With a minimum of ten games remaining, the trio of Larry, Nelson and Tiedeman has a chance to break the school scoring record for three players on the same team.  Through 21 games, the terrific trio has 1,027 points (48.9 points per game).  Their total is just 325 points away from the all-time Bronco record of 1,352 scored by John Coker, Shambric Williams and Steve Shephard in 1993-94 and Roberto Bergersen, Mike Tolman and Gerry Washington in 1997-98.  Larry, Nelson and Tiedeman have to average 32.5 points between them the rest of the way to break the school mark.

Senior guard Matt Bauscher leads the WAC in assist-to-turnover ration and is ranked in three other categories.  Bauscher is 17^th nationally with an outstanding ratio of 2.83.  Matt is ranked third in the league in three-point shooting (47.6%), ninth in field-goal percentage (52.4%) and 10^th in assists (3.1 per game).  Bauscher has a shot at making the all-time Bronco top ten for career three-point percentage, three-pointers in a season and season three-point percentage.

Bauscher’s running mate in the backcourt, sophomore Anthony Thomas, is second in the conference in steals (1.9 per game), fifth in assists (4.0) and fifth in assists-to-turnovers (1.56).  Thomas has a great chance to rank in the top ten all-time for both assists and steals in a season.  “AT” has 84, 38 short of Bronco great Steve Connor’s 1228 in 1975-76  Thomas also has 40 steals on the season, 14 short of both Arnell Jones in 1987-88 and Roberto Bergersen in 1998-99.

Four Broncos have combined for 23 20-point games this season, two more than any other team in the WAC.  Larry has nine, second only to Utah State’s Jaycee Carroll, while Nelson has six, Tiedeman five and Bauscher three.  In conference games, the Broncos also lead with 12 individual 20-point games.  Utah State is second in both categories with 21 and 9 respectively.  Larry and Tiedeman are tied for the league lead in 20-point conference games with Carroll and Hawai’i’s Matt Gibson with four each. 

Graham’s group has a very impressive achievement off the court:  Nelson, Bauscher and Tiedeman have already graduated and earned their college degrees one semester early.  They are all now working on second degrees at Boise State.  Nelson graduated in business, Bauscher in political science and Tiedeman in communication.

Coach Graham needs just one more win to give him 100 for his career and become only the third Bronco coach in history to reach that plateau.  Bobby Dye (1983-1995) is #1 with 213 wins while Rod Jenson (1995-2002) is second with 109.  Graham’s career record of 99-78 (55.9%) is also third behind Dye (61.6%) and Murray Satterfield (56.7% from 1968-1973).

Graham’s prolific offenses set up success—Boise State is 39-4 in his career when reaching the 80-point plateau (90.7%).  The Broncos are 9-1 in such games this season.  Boise State is even more impressive when scoring 90 or more points; they are a perfect 12-0 in the Graham era.  Boise State is 7-0 this season with wins over Montana Tech (107-53), San Francisco (91-81), Idaho State (93-61), Idaho (95-84), Nevada (95-80), Hawai’i (95-80) and Fresno State (90-89).

Boise State set a school record earlier this season with 90 points in three consecutive games against Division I schools.  The Broncos scored 95 points against both Nevada and Hawai’i and 90 against Fresno State.  The Broncos’ seven 90-point games this season ranks second in school history, topped only by the 1969-70 team and the most 90-point games by a Boise State basketball team in 33 years.  Their total of 10 80-point games is tied for seventh in the record book. 

The Louisiana Tech game will be broadcast live on ESPN Full Court, while both will be on KTVB TV and KBOI radio in Boise.
