Four Boise State student-athletes were honored
by the Western Athletic Conference for their performances last week, as the
red-hot winter of 2008 continues for the Broncos.
Hannah
Redmon and Lindsay Ward were named WAC Gymnast and Specialist of the Week, respectively,
for the week of February 4-10. Bronco hammer thrower Simon Wardhaugh was named WAC Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of
the Week and jumper Eleni Kafourou is
the WAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the week.
Redmond posted career highs in
capturing individual titles on the vault and floor exercise in a 194.375-191.600 victory over San Jose
State last week.
With her 9.90 against the Spartans, Redmond now owns the top vault score in the WAC
this season and her 9.90 on floor is tied for second in the league. The Bronco freshman is #21 in the nation on
the floor. She also finished second in
the all-around this week with a 38.875.
The award is Redmond’s second this year.
Ward won the bars title against San Jose State with a 9.90, outdistancing the closest
competitor by ¾’s of a point. Ward leads
the WAC with a 9.856 average this year and is ranked 15th in the
nation. The WAC honor was Ward’s second
this season as well.
Wardhaugh recorded a career-best
mark in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 70-0.50 and is now first in
the WAC and fourth in the nation. Wardhaugh
has posted NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the weight throw in all
four indoor meets this season. This is the second WAC Athlete of the Week honor
for Wardhaugh, who also earned one as a junior.
Kafourou continues to rewrite the
Bronco record books in both the long jump and the triple jump. The Bronco junior broke her own mark in the
long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 8.50 inches and also shattered the school
record in the triple by clearing 43-0.50 at the Bronco Invitational last
week. Kafourou is ranked first in the
WAC and sixth in the country in both events and has posted NCAA provisional
qualifying marks in both.
