Alex Franklin had 30
points and 18 rebounds, and Edwin Ubiles added 22 points as Siena embarrassed Boise State 93-70 in Taco Bell Arena last
night in ESPN’s Bracket-Buster game.
The Saints of the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference broke open a tie game with a 12-0 run to go up
21-9 with the game just 5 minutes and 10 seconds underway. Sienna never trailed after that point.
Boise State (20-7) went into the locker room
at halftime happy to cut the deficit to 45-40.
They pulled within two at 48-46 when Matt Nelson scored two minutes into
the second half. Sienna answered the
challenge by steadily pulling away thanks to numerous instances of Boise State not taking care of the
basketball (the Broncos finished with 20 turnovers). The Saints finished the game on a 13-5 run.
Nelson finished with 20
points leading the Bronco scoring effort.
Siena held Boise State's leading scorer, Reggie Larry,
to only eight points, 10 below his season's average. Larry did tie Bronco all-time great Bill Otey
for eighth place with four field goals to up his season total to 192. He also blocked two shots to tie Jeff Kelley
for seventh with 69 career blocks. Tyler Tiedeman
scored 12 points and Jamar Greene 10 for the Broncos. Boise State played without starting guard
Matt Bauscher, who rolled
an ankle in practice this week. Tiedeman
hit two three-pointers to pass Coby Karl’s season total of 67 in the 2004-05
season. Tiedeman is now just four treys
behind Abe Jackson for fourth place all-time.
Boise State, in the thick of the race for
the Western Athletic Conference title, was unable to box out the smaller Saints
in this non-conference matchup. Sienna
grabbed 44 rebounds to just 36 for the Broncos.
Larry and Nelson had been having their way inside but on this night, the
Saints outscored Boise State 46-28 in the key.
Larry, Nelson and Tyler
Tiedeman now have 1,307 points this season to move into fifth place in Bronco
history, passing Childs, Jones and Wilson Foster (1987-88) and Ron Austin,
Steve Wallace and Greg Bunn (1970-71).
With a great game in their next outing (45 points between them), the
2008 Boise State trio could tie or beat the all-time record. That mark is co-held by John Coker, Sherman
Williams and Steve Shephard (1993-94) and Roberto Bergersen, Mike Tolman and
Gerry Washington (1997-98) with each trio finishing the season with 1,352
points.
Larry and Nelson passed
the duos of Steve Connor & Pat Hoke and Chris Childs & Arnell Jones to
slide into ninth place all-time with 927 points this season. The number six scoring duo of Coby Karl and
Jermaine Blackburn (955 points) is within reach in Boise State’s next game. A full review of the all-time records that are
threatened by this Bronco team follows this article.
Boise State jumped into third-place
all-time with 495 assists this season, just 45 behind the school record.
Sienna improved its season record to 17-10 with the lopsided
win over one of the WAC’s better teams.
