Boise State Celebrates Four Seniors

Once in a great while, a senior class comes along that is special, even magical. This year, four seniors are set to play their last regular-season game in Taco Bell Arena. Join us as we salute Matt Bauscher, Reggie Larry, Matt Nelson and Tyler Tiedman!

Although Bronco fans didn’t get a chance to know them as well as they would have liked, with none of Boise State’s four seniors playing here for more than three years, they have left an indelible mark on the program.  Matt Bauscher, Reggie Larry, Matt  Nelson and Tyler Tiedeman have led the Broncos to one of their best seasons in school history.  Tomorrow (Thursday) night, these four will be honored for their great contributions in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Night in Taco Bell Arena.  Boise State hosts Utah State at 7.

These four great Broncos are a major reason that Boise State is second in the country in field goal percentage (51.1 percent), sixth in assists (18.3 per game), 13^th in scoring (81.6 points per game) and 25^th in three-point percentage (39.3%).  The Broncos lead the WAC in scoring average, scoring margin, field goal percentage, assists and defensive rebounds and are second in the league in steals, three-point field goals, three-point percentage and assists/turnover ratio.

There are several things to watch after these seniors have been honored and the game gets underway as they assault the school record book.  With 19 points, Reggie Larry will become the 19^th member of the 1,000 Point Club at Boise State.  With seven field goals, Larry will tie Steve Connor at #5 for the most field goals in a season.

 Larry and Matt Nelson rank as the eighth best rebounding duo in the nation with 17.0 rebounds per game between them.  They are the #30 scoring duo in the country with 34.4 points per game.  Larry and Nelson are one of only three duos in the nation to rank in the top 30 in scoring and the top 10 in rebounding.  With 30 points, the duo will rank as the third-highest scoring duo in school history.  With 42 points, they will rank #2 all-time.

Larry, Nelson and Tyler Tiedeman rank as the 22^nd-highest scoring trio in the country with 48.4 points per game. They already have shattered the all-time school mark, ranking #1 in school history with 1,388 points as the top-scoring trio ever.  

With four three-pointers, Tiedeman will tie Mike Tolman at #4 for the most treys in a season at Boise State.

If Boise State is able to score 80 points, this Bronco team will rank third all-time with 14 games of 80 or more points this season.  Ten field goals will give the Broncos the second most in school history.  But here’s the best one, because it typifies what this Bronco team is all about.  With 15 assists against Utah State, The 2007-08 Broncos will break the school record!

Those are the numbers—here are the four great seniors we celebrate on Senior Day…

Matt Bauscher

The inspirational sparkplug and the glue that holds the Broncos together on the court, Bauscher was named the Jeff Foster Memorial Award winner each of the past two seasons.

For his career, Bauscher is averaging 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.  He is a very good rebounder from the guard position.  He is hitting 38.9% from three-point territory (105-270).  He has 197 career assists, 78 steals and 14 blocked shots.

Matt is averaging 9.1 points per game this season for Coach Greg Graham’s Broncos.  He leads the WAC and is fourth in the nation in assists/turnover ratio with three times as many assists as turnovers.  Bauscher is hitting 42.1 percent (45-for-107) of his three-point attempts, seventh in the league.  Matt is averaging 3.4 rebounds and has 87 assists, 29 steals and four blocked shots.  His 3.11 assists per game average ranks ninth in the WAC.

Last season, Matt was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic team for the second straight year.  He averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds while making 49 percent (47-of-96) shots and 38.6 percent (22-of-57) three-point tries. 

In 2005-2006, Bauscher was named to the WAC All-Academic team.  He started 20 games at guard and finished third on the team with 8.5 points per game and tied for the lead in steals with 30.  Matt also averaged 3.2 rebounds per game.  He enjoyed a career night against San Jose State with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and four three pointers, five rebounds and five assists. 

 Reggie Larry

Larry played only two years but his name will live on in the Bronco record books as one of the top forwards in Bronco history.  He jumps well and is money when he gets the ball deep inside.  Larry was a first-team preseason All-WAC choice and has lived up that billing.

This year, Reggie is averaging 18.8 points a game (third in the WAC) and has really improved his game with 43.8 (32-for-73) shooting from three-point territory (fourth in the conference).  He is also leading the league with 9.2 rebounds per game and has 52 assists, 42 steals and 28 blocked shots.  Larry is hitting 54.3 percent from the field (204-376), seventh in the conference.  Reggie has 12 double-doubles already this season.  He hit a career-high 27 points against Fresno State in January. 

Last year, Larry was named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team and shared the team’s “Hard Hat Award” with Matt Nelson, which goes to the team’s best rebounder.  He finished the season second on the team and eighth in the WAC with 14.1 points per game.  He was also second on the team and sixth in the WAC in rebounding with 8.1 per game and was sixth in the league in blocked shots with 44 (fifth most in school history).  Larry was also seventh in the WAC in field goal percentage, fifth in defensive rebounds and ninth in offense rebounds.  He had nine double-doubles on the season and blocked an incredible five shots against San Jose State.  Reggie’s best overall game came against Sacramento State when he scored 24 points (9-of-10 shooting) and grabbed 11 rebounds. 

Matt Nelson

Nelson transferred to Boise State from Eastern Washington, where he helped the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament.  He could do it again this season with the Broncos.  He is a force not to be denied inside, chooses his shots wisely and is an aggressive rebounder.

Matt is averaging 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds over his two-year Bronco career.  When you add in his years at EWU, he has scored 1,280 points and pulled down 773 rebounds.  He also has 162 assists, 71 steals and 25 blocked shots.  He is averaging 58.4% from the floor (495-848). 

Nelson is averaging 15.6 points per game this season (eighth in the WAC) as the perfect compliment to Larry and hitting an incredible 65.0 percent of his shots (third in the nation).  Matt is averaging 7.6 rebounds a game, second in the WAC to teammate Larry.  He has 59 assists, 17 steals and seven blocked shots.  His high game was 25 against Idaho in January.  Nelson has nine double-doubles this season.

Last season, Nelson was named to the WAC All-Newcomer team along with Larry.  He was named not only to the WAC All-Academic team but the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team as well.  Hs shared the team’s “Hard Hat Award” with Larry.  Matt was third on the team and 12^th in the WAC with 13.5 points per game.  He led the WAC in field goal percentage (57.8 percent) and was fourth in the conference with 8.9 rebounds per game.  Nelson was also fourth in both offensive and defensive rebounds.  He finished the year with 10 double-doubles.  He hit for a season high 25 points against Hawai’i and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds at Montana.

Tyler Tiedeman

This sharpshooter from California took up basketball just three seasons ago after playing baseball in junior college.  He’s learned quickly.  When opponents focus too much inside on Larry and Nelson, Tiedeman burns them from outside.  And how.

Tiedeman is averaging 8.0 points and 2.6 rebounds for his career.  He is hitting 49.5% (247-499) from the field and a sizzling 43.1% (118-274) from three-point land.  He has 173 career assists, 36 steals and 15 blocked shots. 

Tiedeman is averaging 14.0 points per game (11^th in the conference) this season to give Boise State a great 1-2-3 combination.  Tyler is hitting 50.3 percent (73-145) from three-point land which ranks second in the WAC and third in the nation and he is one of the team’s best free-throw shooters at 73.0 percent (65-89).  Tiedeman is averaging an even 54 percent from the field (134-248), which is eighth in the league.  He is also averaging 3.4 rebounds per game and has 89 assists, 15 steals and 10 blocked shots.  Tyler hit for a career-high 27 in a big win earlier this season over Nevada.

Last year, Tiedeman averaged 4.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, making 47.2 percent (51-for-108) of his shots and hitting 39.7 percent (23-for-58) of three-pointers and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line. 

In the 2005-06 year, Tiedeman started 16 games, finishing with 5.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  He hit for 24 points at Nevada when he nailed 9-of-13 shots and also added four steals.
