Broncos In The WAC Championship

Boise State served Utah State with some of their own medicine. Great shooting from the floor, great shooting from the line, superior rebounding and few turnovers. After a 19-point blowout loss on their home court last week to Utah State, the Boise State basketball team had a lot to prove.  The Broncos bounced back from that horrible game to dismantle the high-flying Aggies 88-78 last night in the Western Athletic Conference semifinals in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Boise State earned a spot opposite hometown New Mexico State in the WAC Final tonight.

Matt Bauscher (23 points) was a sizzling 8-10 from the floor, including five-of-six shooting from three-point territory, and reserve guard Aaron Garner had a career-high 14 points to provide the difference from last week’s game.  All-WAC forward Reggie Larry was his usual impressive self with 23 points but seemed to take command of the game down the stretch.  Tyler Tiedeman also had 14 points for Coach Greg Graham’s victorious Broncos. 

Bauscher forced Utah State’s Jaycee Carroll to 7-of-17 shooting on the evening.  Carroll, the #1 scorer in the WAC, did finish with 20 points thanks to a couple of late three-pointers, but was held scoreless during a 21-minute period of the game.

For the second consecutive game, the Broncos utilized superb free-throw shooting to emerge victorious.  Boise State came into the tournament as the league’s #7 team from the charity stripe at just 66.4 percent.  In Wednesday’s opening-round win over Hawai’i, the Broncos shot 75 percent.  Last night, they hit 80.4%.  Larry was 7-9, Tiedeman connected on 7-of-8, Garner was a perfect 3-3 and Matt Nelson was 2-2.

Another difference came in the rebounding department.  Boise State was beaten badly on the boards by USU just one week ago.  Last night, it was the Broncos who won the battle of the boards 30-27, with Larry and Nelson picking up six each.  Boise State also added to their school record assists total, dishing out 17 as a team to reach 569 for the season.  The previous record was 540, set by the 1975-76 Bronco team.  The 2007-08 Broncos also have set school marks for both field goals and points.

Bauscher, who missed tying a career-high by one point, buried consecutive three-pointers to cap a 14-4 run late in the first half for a 40-35 lead Boise State.  The Broncos led 42-37 at the break and 47-37 shortly into the second half after a basket by Anthony Thomas and another three from Bauscher.

Then after Utah State’s Stephen DuCharme scored to trim the margin to 49-41, Nelson had six points during an 8-2 spurt that opened Boise State's lead to 57-43 with 15:50 to go.  The Broncos extended that lead to 69-52 on a Larry three-pointer with less than 10 minutes to go.

Carroll’s final three-pointer pulled Utah State to within eight points at 79-71 with 1:49 left and Kris Clark added a trey of his own to cut the lead to seven with 1:11 remaining.  WAC opponents have counted on Boise State to miss free throws to get back in the game.  All of a sudden, that is not happening.  Larry and Tiedeman combined for 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to hold off the #1 seeded Aggies. 

Larry’s seven field goals propelled him past all-time greats Ron Austin and Roberto Bergersen into second place in the Bronco record book.  He now has 227 this season, just four short of the school record held by John Coker.

Stephen DuCharme scored 17 for Utah State, which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.  Tyler Newbold scored 16 and Gary Wilkinson added 12 for Coach Stew Morrill’s team.

Boise State missed a chance to win the WAC title outright in the debacle last week against Utah State.  They atoned for it last night with a solid effort from start to finish.  Utah State shared the WAC championship in a first-ever four-way tie, along with Boise State, Nevada and New Mexico State. Utah State earned the tournament's top seed with a 4-2 record against the others.

Boise State is now 24-8 (tying school record for wins) and faces the homestanding Aggies of New Mexico State tonight in the WAC Championship.  New Mexico State is 21-13 but like Utah State, owned the Broncos during the regular season with two wins over Coach Graham’s team.
