Boise State
is seventh in the nation for the best combined Division I football and
basketball record. The rankings give
equal weight to both sports by using a mathematical formula* and are expressed
as an overall winning percentage. The
Broncos are tied for ninth in the combined football-basketball records without
weighting. Boise
State finished 10-3 in football and
is currently 25-8 in basketball, which is good for a weighted 76.34 winning
percentage.
To finish high in the national rankings, a school must be
good at both sports.
Case in point: Duke,
which is 27-5 in basketball, has a bad football team at 1-11, making it hard
for the Blue Devils to look good in combined football-basketball records—they’re
all the way back at #87. LSU, which won
the hypothetical national championship in football, is just 13-18 in
basketball, making the Tigers tied for 30th in the country. Illinois,
which had a Rose Bowl football team, is mediocre in basketball and ranks 50th.
Other WAC schools in the ranks are Hawai’i (29th—64.49%),
Fresno State (57th—54.93%), Nevada (52nd—55.89%), New Mexico State (90th—45.38%), Utah State (94th—43.63%), San Jose State (#97—41.15%), Louisiana Tech (#114—30.83%) and Idaho at #120 (17.96%).
TCU, which was chosen over Boise State to be the last member
of the Mountain West Conference, is all the way back at #58, 51 spots behind
the Broncos. Two teams that turned back
the Broncos in football (East Carolina and Washington)
could not come close to Boise State
in basketball and in fact Washington
ranked behind San Jose State
in the combined rankings.
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Alabama
is all the way down at #65. Traditional
power Nebraska is 70th. Notre Dame is #71. Michigan
is all the way back at #75 out of 120--tough times in Ann
Arbor. Iowa
is 91st.
38 of the 120 Division I programs have winning records in
both football and basketball. They are: Air Force, Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas,
Boise State, BYU, California, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State,
Houston, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Michigan State, Mississippi State,
Navy, New Mexico, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Purdue, Southern Mississippi,
Tennessee, Texas, Texas A & M, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UCF, USC, Utah, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, 18 schools unfortunately have losing records in
both sports including three (Colorado,
Iowa State
and South Carolina) from “BCS”
conferences. They are: Arkansas State, Army, Buffalo, Colorado,
Colorado State, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Idaho, Iowa State, Louisiana-Lafayette,
Louisiana Tech, North Carolina State, Northern Illinois, Rice, San Jose State, SMU,
Toledo and Wyoming.
*The weighted formula is (((X/Y)*A) + B)/C, where
A=number of football wins
B=number of basketball wins
C=total number of football and basketball games
X=number of basketball games
Y=number of football games
