Broncos In 14th Place At NCAA Championships

Boise State is off to a good start after the first day of competition at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships. The Broncos are in 14th place with seven wrestlers still competing in St. Louis.

Boise State is in 14^th place after the first day of action at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.  Two Broncos are alive in the championship round while another five are in the consolation bracket.  There are only nine other teams with seven or more wrestlers remaining in the competition.

Nate Lee and Tyler Sherfey led the way for Coach Greg Randall’s Broncos by advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective weight classifications.  Sherfey scored a dramatic win over 6^th-seeded Matt Kocher of Pittsburgh with a 3-3 riding time victory in the 157-pound bracket after first downing Christopher Stout of American 8-5.  He will face Penn State’s Daniel Vallimont in the quarterfinals today.  Lee shocked #8 seed Gabriel Dretsch of Minnesota and then  outpointed Brandon Moss of Oklahoma State 2-1 at 174 pounds.  For his effort, Lee will now face #1 seed Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh in the quarters. 

Cory Fish, Levi Jones and Kirk Smith lost last night after opening round wins and will be in the wrestlebacks today with an opportunity to finish in third place.  Fish took down #12 seed Andrae Hernandez of Indiana at 133 pounds with a 4-3 decision before losing to #5 Nicholas Fanthorpe of Iowa State 3-1.   Fish meets David Marble of Bucknell this morning.  Jones defeated Germane Lindsey of Ohio 8-2 in the 141-pound classification to advance to the second round where he lost 10-2 to #5 seed Kellen Russell of Michigan.  Levi will challenge Patrick McLemore of Northern Illinois in the wrestlebacks.  10^th seed Smith scored an 11-3 major decision over Jacob Devlin of Air Force at 184 pounds before losing to #7 Phillip Keddy of Iowa for the third time this season by a count of 10-2.  Smith awaits the winner of the match between Army’s Scott Ferguson and Austin Trotman of Appalachian State.    

Matt Casperson battled back after an opening round loss to record a fall over Jared Villers of West Virginia last night in the 197-pound division. He will meeet tough Daren Burns of UNC-Greensboro this morning.

Adam Hall also won his wrestleback with an 8-5 victory over Matt Cathell of Delaware State in the 149-pound class.  Hall will now take on Morgan Atkinson, the 12^th seed from Cal State-Fullerton.

Nick Smith and Kurt Swartz both lost last night to end their seasons.
