On the heels of a national Top 25 ranking for the Boise State women's tennis
team earlier this week, the Broncos set a school record by having a fifth team
ranked during a school year. The Boise State football team was ranked as
high as #7 in the nation before falling to 11th. The Bronco wrestling team
is currently in the top ten in the country. The track team, the gymnastics
team and now the women's tennis team all have reached the Top 25.
Lest anyone in BroncoNation get too excited, a comparison with the elite of
the college sports world shows Boise State how very, very far they have to climb
to reach the top of the mountain. Stanford, for example, has had 24
separate teams ranked in the Top 25 at one point in the year. And this is
commonplace for the Cardinal, who consistently are amongst the leaders in the
Sports Director's Cup Standings, which assigns points to each school based on
success in up to 20 sports--10 men's and 10 women's. In fact, Stanford has
won that Cup 14 times in its history.
UCLA has had 20 teams ranked in the Top 25 this school year, second best
among Division I schools while California, Michigan and North Carolina are right
behind with 19 each. Boise State is in a tie for 58th among all Division 1
schools, a long way from the top, but still better than they've done in their
short history as a Division I school.
Perhaps a better measure might be how many teams each school had that
actually finished in the Top 25 at the end of their season. As the school
year winds down, BroncoCountry will be watching to see how that ends up.
For the data below, I used one rating service for each sport to be consistent
and, where one was available, used the ranking by coaches in that sport, since
they are the most reputable. The USA Today or ESPN Coaches' Polls were
used for football, men's and women's basketball, softball, baseball and ice
hockey, the GymInfo polls were used for gymnastics and the NSCAA (National
Soccer Coaches Association of America) rankings were used for soccer. Data
from the InterMat poll were used for wrestling rankings, CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) rankings were
used for swimming, College Tennis Online for both men's and women's tennis, the
CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association) rankings for water polo and the NFHCA
(National Field Hockey Coaches Association) poll for field hockey.
The AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) polls were used for
volleyball, the IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association)
rankings served as the basis for women's lacrosse information and the USILA
(United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) for men's lacrosse.
The USFCA (United States Fencing Coaches of America) polls were used as the
basis for both men's and women's fencing, the USTFCCCA (United States Track
& Field and Cross Country Coaches of America) polls contained data
extrapolated for the Top 25 in cross country, the NTCA (National Tenpins Coaches
Association) poll was used for women's bowling and the Golfweek Top 25 was used
for both men's and women's golf.
Here is a list of all the Division 1 schools that have had at least one team
ranked in the Top 25 at some point of their season.
