The #23 Boise State men's tennis team downed #44 Nebraska
5-2 to win the Red Lion Spring Break Invitational yesterday at the Appleton
Tennis Complex in Boise. The Broncos won for the seventh time in their
last eight matches.
Stanley Sarapanich and Clancy Shields wrapped up their
doubles match first with an 8-3 win over Christopher Aumuelle and Benedikt
Lindheim at #2 doubles. The Cornhuskers quickly tied things up with an
easy 8-2 win by Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe over Blane Shields and
Matt Solomon in the #3 spot. Kean Feeder and James Meredith, the
68th-ranked doubles team in the country, found themselves down 6-4 to Nebraska's
David Bendheim and Calin Paar but rallied for a thrilling 9-8 win to give Coach
Greg Patton's team the doubles point.
Sarapanich
disposed of Van Impe 6-2, 6-1 but Stahmer beat Cristian Hodel of Boise State
6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles to bring Nebraska within a point at 2-1. Blane
Shields won a hard-fought victory over Lindheim at #6 singles by the count of
6-3, 3-6, 6-4 but Nebraska's Aumuelle upset #80 Meredith 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at
#3. Seeing a 3-2 Boise State lead, #78 Feeder came from behind in the
second set to clinch the match and the championship for the Broncos with a 6-4,
7-6 win over Paar. Clancy Shields then beat Bendheim 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to give
Boise State their final margin of victory.
Boise
State, now 14-7 this season, is off next week before hosting New Mexico
next Sunday at Appleton. Even with the loss, Nebraska slips to 16-3 on the season. The Cornhuskers have achieved that record with a much easier schedule than Boise State, who has played 14 nationally-ranked teams, including 6 in the Top 25.
