Boise State's 40.5 average points per game over the last 10 years has broken
the modern record, is the best scoring output in 116 years and ranks second in
the 140-year history of college football.
In an analysis of every school that has played major college football since
1869, the Broncos rank #2 all-time* in scoring, averaging 40.5 points per game
from 1999-2008. That breaks the modern era record (since 1920) of 39.4
points per game, set by Nebraska from 1992-2001.
Yale is the only school that can boast a better scoring total. That
record may never be beaten. Yale averaged 46.6 points per game from
1883-1892. In the first year of that streak, they outscored opponents
540-2. They destroyed Wesleyan 60-0 and 94-0, Columbia 93-0, Rutgers 92-0
and Michigan 64-0. Also included in the ten-year barrage was a 113-0 win
over Dartmouth, another 70-0 rout of Rutgers, a 70-0 win over Cornell, a 70-0
win over Williams and 25--yes, count 'em 25 wins in 10 years over favorite
victim Wesleyan, including scores of 136-0, 106-0, 76-0, 75-0 and 72-0.
In 1886, Yale outscored opponents 687-4. In 1888, they beat teams by a
total score of 694-0. How can Boise State (or anyone) compete with
that? They were quite simply head and shoulders above everyone else in
college football.
Harvard, which averaged 40.2 points from 1886-1895, is third. Princeton
(39.9 from 1884-1893) ranks fourth, followed by the aforementioned Nebraska
team, Nebraska's 1982-1991 teams (38.6 ppg), the current Texas team (1999-2008
at 38.59 points), Florida State (38.4 points from 1987-1996) in eighth, Florida
(37.6 ppg from 1993-2002) ninth and the current Oklahoma team (37.3 points a
game from 1999-2008).
Four other teams from the Western Athletic Conference make the list of teams
that have averaged 30 or more points per game over a ten-year period.
Hawai'i (35.2 points from 1999-2008) is 18th, Fresno State (34.3 points per game
from 1985-1994) is 22nd, Nevada (32.5 ppg from 1993-2002) ranks 32nd, the
current Fresno State team (31.16 from 1999-2008) is 43rd and Louisana Tech is
44th, averaging 30.8 points from 1996-2005.
In addition to those four, three other schools on Boise State's 2009 fall
schedule are ranked in the all-time top 50. Oregon is #29, averaging 32.8
points from 1999-2008. Miami of Ohio averaged 31.6 points a game from
1996-2005 while Bowling Green averaged 30.46 points from 1999-2008 to rank
50th.
To somehow pull off the impossible and catch Yale to break the all-time
record, Boise State would need to score 2,205 points in the Kellen Moore era
over the next three years. That's an average of 55.1 points per game over
the next three years!
Much thanks to James Howell's great web site (http://www.jhowell.net/)
that lists scores of all major college football teams since 1869.
*Note: This list is each school's best output of an era.
Obviously, there are any number of combinations for each of the top schools that
would result in the top 10 teams taking up the top 30 or 40 places in this list
if we listed each combination. Rather, this shows each school's offensive
output during an era at their most productive and does not show much if any
overlap.
