Bronco Soccer Team Downs Portland State 3-1

When you keep improving every year, more attention is focused on you and the pressure is greater. The Boise State soccer team made up for a disappointing loss Friday with a nice 3-1 win on the road over Portland State this afternoon in Beaverton, Oregon.

Expectations are high for the 2009 Boise State soccer team.  The Broncos’ 3-1 victory this afternoon over Portland State in Beaverton was important for the simple reason that they scored that first road win important for their psyche.

Chelsea Robinson, Cheyenne Jones and Maureen Fitzgerald scored for the Broncos to even their weekend road trip record at 1-1.  Preseason Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Shannon Saxton stole the ball in Viking territory 28 minutes into the contest, drove the flank and flipped a pass just outside the box to a waiting Robinson.  Chelsea booted the ball just inside the near goalpost for Boise State ’s first goal of the season.

Coach Steve Lewis’s club extended the lead just before halftime when Ashley Walsh fired the ball into PSU’s 18-yard box and Cheyenne Jones rammed it home for a 2-0 Boise State lead.  After Kala Renard got Portland State on the board in the 55^th minute, Fitzgerald cemented the win 12 minutes later with a nice shot into the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Liz Ruiz picked up five saves in goal to go with 10 against Seattle University Friday.  Lewis played 19 of his players to give them good early game experience.

Boise State concludes their four-game road tour at the Navy Invitational against Rider and Navy in Annapolis , Maryland .  Portland State , a 1-0 upset winner of Oregon State in Corvallis Friday, fell to 1-1 with the loss.
