Boise
State
’s defense put on a show Thursday night in Bronco Stadium as the Broncos
downed #14
Oregon
19-8. With the win,
Boise
State
moves into a tie for 82nd for the best 75-game home record in college football
history. The Broncos eclipsed their school record of 69-6 that included the
Nevada
loss of 1997 and has them in a tie for #101.
With that loss removed from the last 75 games,
Boise
State
’s current home streak is 70-5 and moves into the top 100 for all-time.
The Broncos of today also rank #120 with a 68-7 record from
the New Mexico State game of 1997 until the Hawai’i
contest of 2008, #136 with a 67-8 record from the Idaho game of 1996
through the Idaho State game of last year, #149 with a 66-9 record extending
from the North Texas game of 1996 until 2007 and initially entered this elite
list at #162 with a 65-10 record from the Utah State game of 1996 through the
San Jose State game of 2007.
You’ve heard that Boise State ranks in the top 10 of
all-time in this, or the top 15 in that and may wonder why they are so low for a
fabulous home winning streak. This
is because, while the other statistics include roughly a ten-year period, it
takes longer than that to host 75 home games and, while the Broncos have been
successful throughout, they didn’t hit high gear until 2001-02.
Nevertheless, they are in good company.
Boise
State
is one of just nine schools since 1930 that have lost 10 or less home games out
of 75.
Alabama
tops modern schools with a 74-1 record from 1957-1982.
Nebraska
’s best home record was 73-2; the Cornhuskers achieved that from 1991-2002.
Florida
State
is next of the modern schools with a mark of 72-2-1 (1987-1999).
Miami of Florida and
Florida
were 71-4 from 1984-1996 and from 1989-2001 respectively.
Boise State
,
Alabama
and
Texas
are tied for fifth among teams from 1930-2009 with each sporting 70-5 records.
Army (68-6-1) from 1936-1950 and
Oklahoma
(66-7-2) from 1943-1959 are the other modern schools.
Princeton
, which put together an amazing streak of 75 straight wins from 1887-1900 is the
all-time leader.
Michigan
(1894-1904) and
Princeton
(1869-1893) are tied for second with sparkling 74-0-1 records.
Michigan
was also 73-0-2 from 1893-1904 and from 1897-1907 and Yale is the other
unbeaten team for 75 games with the same 73-0-2 record from 1886-1898.
If the Broncos are fortunate enough to keep winning, they
could move up the ladder as early as this year.
With two consecutive home wins,
Boise
State
can remove another loss from its 75-game record and achieve a 71-4 record that
would put them in a tie for 64th all-time. Five
consecutive home wins would remove another loss from the early Division I-A
years and give the Broncos a 72-3 mark, an achievement that would put them
fourth of all schools since 1930 and a tie for 37th all-time.
The next step is a ways away.
Boise
State
would have to win eight straight home games to tie
Nebraska
for second among modern schools and 20th all-time and to tie
Alabama
for tops among schools since 1930 and seventh in history they need 22 straight
home wins from this point forward.
One might look at the list and wonder why USC, with one of
the best records this decade, does not appear.
The Trojans have over 10 losses in any 75-game period, with a current
54-10 mark which is 11 wins shy of making the list.
Obviously, during a tremendous run of winning home games, a
school would be listed multiple times from one point in the streak to another
with the same record. This list
shows only multiple entries that overlap in cases in which a significant period
of time has passed. Further, in
deciding when a school’s streak begins when multiple records are attained, it
is when the home record first started; the earliest date in which they compiled
their record.
It should be noted that legendary
Carlisle
did not make this list because they didn’t play 75 home games in their
history. The school which featured
all-time athlete Jim Thorpe had a record of 65-3-3 from 1896-1917.
Bold type indicates teams who compiled their streaks from
1930 to the present.
