Boise
State
used a stifling defense to
smother
Miami
last night 48-0 in Bronco Stadium and moved into the top 15
of all-time with 100 wins in a decade. The
Broncos have won 100 since 2000 against 17 defeats.
Of the 36 teams that have won 91 or more games in a decade in college
football history,
Boise
State
ranks 11th in
winning percentage (85.47%).
The
Broncos are tied with
Pennsylvania
and Yale for 13th
place, each of which recorded 100 wins from 1900-1909.
Boise
State
opened the decade with a
10-2 mark followed by an 8-4 season in 2001.
They then put together three remarkable seasons in which they finished in
the Top 15 nationally with 12-1, 13-1 and 11-1 campaigns.
In 2005, the Broncos stubbed their toes with a 9-4 season but then
recorded a perfect 13-0 year in 2006. They
hit double digits once again in both 2007 (10-3) and last season (12-1) and have
now won both games this season.
Pennsylvania
and Yale hold down the top
two spots with 124 and 116 wins, respectively, from 1890-1899.
That was a decade in which a schedule of 15-16 games per year was not
uncommon.
Pennsylvania
was 11-3 in 1890, followed
by seasons of 11-2, 15-1, 12-3, 12-0, 14-0, 14-1, 15-0, 12-1, and then an
8-3-2
campaign in 1899. That
is not to take away from their achievements at all, for Yale has the top winning
percentage for a decade with 94.04% and
Pennsylvania
’s end of the century
performance was 89.29%.
It
does make it impossible for a modern team to approach that win total unless they
won every game of a decade since they only play 12-13 games per season now.
Florida
State
, with 109 wins in the
1990’s, ranks third all-time and is the modern leader, with
Nebraska
’s 1990-1990 teams right
behind with 108 wins.
Boise State
,
Oklahoma
and
Texas
all legitimately have a
chance to topple those two with outstanding seasons in 2009.
Oklahoma
currently has 103 wins,
followed by the Broncos with 100 and
Texas
with 99.
Oklahoma
achieved their win total
by playing more games however. The
Sooners (103-20) have played six more games than
Boise
State
this decade with a winning
percentage of 83.74%.
Texas
has 99 wins against 18
defeats.
