Boise
State
broke through in the second half with
two goals as the Bronco soccer team downed
Nevada
2-0 in
Boise
this afternoon.
With the win, Steve Lucas’s crew handed
Nevada
its first Western Athletic Conference
defeat.
Brandy Hickcox and
Erica Parks provided the second-half spark for
Boise
State
after a defensive struggle in the
opening 45 minutes. Cheyenne
Jones’ fired a shot from 15 yards out in the 12th minute but
Nevada
keeper Marie Cove tipped the ball over
the crossbar. The Wolf Pack came
back two minutes later with a scoring opportunity of their own, but sophomore
keeper Liz Ruiz denied
Nevada
’s Annabelle Allen.
Boise
State
dominated the game between the nets
with 27 shots to just four for
Nevada
and nearly the entire second half was played in
Nevada
’s half of the field.
Erica Parks’ attempt was just high five minutes into the second half.
Nine minutes later, Chelsea Robinson broke into the clear but her shot
was just wide left.
Hickcox nailed the
game-winner in the 73rd minute, dribbling and dodging the
Nevada
defense before letting loose a
16-yarder that sailed through to the net. It
was Hickcox’s first goal of the season and the ninth different player to score
this year for
Boise
State
.
In the 80th
minute, Parks broke free on a fast break, firing a 17-yarder that the
Nevada
defender blocked.
Parks hustled after the ball, spun around a defender and sent a hart shot
towards the left post that Cove had to dive for to prevent a goal.
Six minutes later,
Boise
State
pressed into Pack territory once
again. Malia Hendrix was awarded a
free kick that Cove caught. On her
return, Shannon Saxton intercepted and broke for the goal.
Saxton saw an opportunity and booted a 16-yarder that was stopped by Cove
in the field of play. Saxton ran it
down and fired another shot. Again
Cove deflected the ball to the left. Parks
was in the right place and sent a rocket into the goal from two yards out for
the insurance goal.
Saxton received
the assist, extending her career assists record to 15 and moving her within one
point of tying the school career points record with 71.
Boise
State

Nevada
is 2-1 and 5-9 overall.
