The surging Boise State soccer team scored two goals in the second half to down Hawai’i 2-1 yesterday in Boise and clinched a berth in next week’s Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Brandy Hickcox booted home a penalty kick in the 67th minute to tie the Wahine and nine minutes later Kaylea Perenon converted the game-winner to give Boise State the win.

Boise State hosts the WAC Tournament next Thursday through Sunday.

Boise State now has topped the .500 mark in each of the last six seasons under Coach Steve Lewis.

Hawai’i got on the board 13 minutes into the game when Mari Punzal sent a high shot from 35 yards that found the nets just under the cross bar.  Boise State keeper Liz Ruiz would shut the Wahine down the rest of the way, however.

In Boise State ’s first scoring drive, Cheyenne Jones beat the defense and fired a perfect pass to Shannon Saxton on the left side of the box 18 yards from the net.  Saxton’s shot was blocked and ricocheted to Jones.  Jones shot but was blocked by Wahine keeper Kanani Taaca.  The rebound went back out to Jones who fired another shot.  This one was blocked by Punzal but she used her hands illegally.  Hickcox stepped up for the penalty kick and nailed a low shot to the right side that Taaca could not respond to and the game was tied.

In the 76th minute, the Broncos had a free kick following a Hawai’i foul.  Freshman Maureen Fitzgerald sent a high arching kick to the far right side of the 18-yard box.  Chelsea Robinson retrieved it and advanced the ball just in front of the Hawai’i goal where Perenon launched it into the back of the net.

Ruiz had five saves in the second half to put Boise State in position to win.

Boise State clinches sixth-straight season at .500 or better ( 9-6-4 ) and are in the WAC Tournament for the fifth year in a row.  Hawai’i falls to 6-11-1 on the year and 2-5 in the WAC.

The Broncos’ winning ways will be put to a test when league leader San Jose State ( 10-4-3 overall) invades Boise Sunday afternoon at 1:05 .  The Spartans have won 13 games in a row.
