Patton Moves In on Hawai'i!

Coach Greg Patton leads his troops into Hawai'i to take on the rest of the Western Athletic Conference this Friday through Sunday in the WAC Men's Tennis Tournament. The Broncos need to win the tournament to hope to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

     The Big Island of Hawai'i is set to host the 2005 WAC Men's Tennis Tournament this Thursday through Saturday.  Here is a preview of the teams:

 

#30 Boise State (27-7, 1-0 against WAC foes)

The Broncos will get a first round bye, making their first match Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Hawaii time versus the winner of Friday's Tulsa (seed no. 4) versus Fresno State (seed no. 5) match.

Last Year: Boise State defeated Hawai'i 4-0 before losing to SMU in the semifinals 4-2.

Luke Shields and Thomas Schoeck are the #9 doubles team in the country.

 

#1--Luke Shields, Fr.,  34-10, 34-8, 6-8 vs. Top 100 players.  Has won 4 in a row and 6 of his last 7.  Shields is the 50th-ranked singles player in the country.  Shields was one of the top five-ranked juniors in the United States prior to coming to Boise State.  He has defeated former NCAA singles champions  Cecil Mammit, formerly of USC, and Luke Smith, formerly of UNLV.

 

Thomas Schoeck, Jr.,  27-10, 35-8, 0-4 vs. Top 100 players.  Won the consolation singles title at the Baylor Tennis Tournament earlier this year. 

 

Matias Silva, Sr.,  28-10, 25-8, 0-5 vs. Top 100 players.  Represented Peru in the 2nd round of the Davis Cup last year.

#39 Rice (13-8, 2-1)

The Owls will play host Hawai'i in the first round on Friday.

Last Year: Rice beat Tulsa and SMU 4-1 to win the WAC Championship.

SMU will take on Nevada in the 1st round.

Last Year: SMU defeated Nevada, 4-0 and Boise State 4-2, before losing to Rice 4-1 in the championship. The Mustangs won the WAC in 1998 and 2002.

McNaughton and Murgier beat the #4 doubles team in the country from Baylor. They are currently ranked 40th in the NCAA in doubles.

#2 Gwinyai Ching 7-18, 17-8.  A #1 player earlier in the year, but an 0-8 record against Top 100 players has sunk him to #2.

The Bulldogs will meet Tulsa in the 1st round.

Fresno State won the WAC in 1996 and 1999. They have also been the runners-up three times (1993, 1995 and 2001).
