With their Top 25 finish in the NCAA National Track and Field Championships
over the weekend,
Boise
State
finished the year tied for #43 in the country with six teams that ended their
respective seasons in the Top 25. The
Boise
State
football team was ranked as high as #7 in the nation before falling to 11th.
The Bronco wrestling team was ranked in the top ten in the country and finished
12th. The gymnastics team, the men’s tennis team and the women’s
indoor track team also finished in the Top 25.
Prior to the 2008-2009 school year,
Boise
State
had never had more than three teams that finished in that elite group.
Boise
State
is tied for 43rd with
Boston
College
,
Cornell
,
Kentucky
,
Purdue
,
South Carolina
, UC-Irvine and
Wisconsin
. The Broncos were just one Top 25
team behind schools such as Harvard, Northwestern,
Indiana
,
Missouri
,
Auburn
and
Alabama
and just three teams shy of qualifying for the top 25.
Although the list which follows this article doesn’t use a formula, it is
close to the Learfield computations, which determine the winner of the
Director’s Cup. Interestingly
enough,
Boise
State
was ranked #41 in the latest release of those standings.
Stanford, which has won the Director’s Cup for the last 14 years, placed an
incredible 22 of its teams in the final Top 25 to set the pace for the rest of
the nation.
California
and
Ohio
State
tied for second with 18 teams each,
Michigan
and
North Carolina
had 17 teams each,
Florida
was sixth with 16 while UCLA,
Penn
State
, USC,
Florida
State
and
Virginia
had 15 Top 25 teams apiece.
For the data below, one rating service for each sport was used and, where one
was available, the ranking by coaches in that sport were used, since they are
the most reputable. In the sports that featured championships whereby the
teams were ranked in order of points accumulated, those results represent the
final Top 25. This is consistent
with the Learfield method that determines the Director’s Cup.
Those sports are men’s and swimming, men’s and women’s indoor and
outdoor track, men’s and women’s cross country, wrestling and men’s and
women’s golf. The USA Today or ESPN Coaches' Polls were used for football,
men's and women's basketball, softball, baseball and ice hockey, the GymInfo
polls were used for gymnastics and the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches
Association of America) rankings were used for soccer. Data from College
Tennis Online are responsible for both men's and women's tennis rankings, the
CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association) rankings were used for water polo and
the NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) poll for field hockey.
The
AVCA
(American Volleyball Coaches Association) polls were used for volleyball, the
IWLCA Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association) rankings served as
the basis for women's lacrosse information and the USILA (United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) for men's lacrosse. The USFCA
(United States Fencing Coaches of America) polls were used as the basis for both
men's and women's fencing and the NTCA (National Tenpins Coaches Association)
poll was used for women's bowling.
Here is a list of all the Division 1 schools that have had at least one team
